CULTIVATING LIFE DURING
WINTER: MYTHS
As the winter is an impor-
tant season for nurturing our
lives properly, myths to combat
cold abound. Deliberate alcohol
consumption would only dissi-
pate more heat from us. Blan-
keting not just the body but also
the head for extra warmth lim-
its oxygen supply and let car-
bon dioxide accumulate inside
the blanket. Hot water face
wash in the morning opens up
our skin pores and expose them
to the cold when we go out. Pro-
longed wearing of facial masks
would preclude our natural de-
velopment of cold tolerance;
paradoxically, we may catch
more flu. Using naked fire to
warm our hands and feet numb
with cold may induce frostbites
or even tissue death - as badly
contracted vessels of such
numb extremities cannot dissi-
pate effectively such sudden
high temperatures, only gentle
rubbing is advised. Scratching
itchy skin due to the cold, dry
air would worsen it - use sooth-
ing creams. Ensure adequate
Calorie intake as the thyroid and
adrenal glands secrete more,
metabolism would naturally
increase. A small glass of wine
a day helps the circulation of the
elderly; stewed meat is good for
the "qi". Appropriate food dur-
ing the winter benefits our
immunity.
冬季是養生滋補的重要季節,保溫禦寒是主要內容之
一,但是,很多人採取的保暖措施不盡合理,有些土辦法,
看似有效,其實大錯特錯了。
飲酒禦寒
生活在東北林區的伐木工人有飲酒禦寒之說,認為喝酒以
後,會增加體內熱量,起到禦寒的作用。河北、山東、山西以及
江南的

熱的感
覺,這是酒精促使人體散發原有熱能的結果,飲酒當時酒精燒得
熱汗淋漓,酒勁過後,因大批熱量散出體外,反而使人渾身冰
涼,導致酒後寒冷。
蒙頭睡覺
當室溫低於攝氏零上16度時,晚上睡覺會感到一些涼意,有
的人因此冬季把頭蒙在被窩裡睡覺,感覺上暖和一些。在沒有取
暖設施的南方,或者取暖設施較差的郊區和農村,蒙頭大睡成為
一種保暖方式。這是非常不科學的保暖方式,我們需要吸進的是
氧氣,呼出的是二氧化碳,被窩裡空氣流通太差,氧氣會越來越
少,二氧化碳和不潔氣體卻越積越多。所以,好多蒙頭大睡的人
醒後會感到昏昏沉沉、疲乏無力。這就是不潔空氣導致的呼吸不
暢的結果。
熱水洗臉
冬季傍晚回家,用一盤熱氣騰騰的水洗洗臉、蒸熏一下,會
讓人感覺很舒服。這是因為,蒸騰的熱氣吹開了面部細微毛孔,
促進了微循環。有人因此早晚都用熱水淨面,但,早晨卻是不宜
用熱水洗臉,因為在冷空氣刺激下,人的汗腺、毛細血管呈收縮
狀態。當遇上熱水時則迅速擴張,但洗完以後,馬上外出上班,
