GRIEVING FOR A
PHYSICIAN DYING OF
CANCER
Dr Ding, an elderly neurolo-
gist in our Hospital for nearly 50
years, had vigilance for cancer in
his patients, but he himself
missed his own stomach cancer
- 6 months ago, he had poor
appetite, easy fatigability and
weight loss but were thought to
be due to "old age".When he had
complete appetite loss, he still
feared the pain of stomach fiber-
scope examination.He continued
working and to quietly "drip" him-
self at home.When he got worse
after a fortnight, he had low-grade
fever. Finally, a scope examina-
tion found an advanced stomach
cancer situated near the exit of
the stomach (pylorus) along with
liver secondaries (picked up by
ultra-sound examination) as well
as blood-stained abdominal
fluids. Beyond any curative
modalities, he had only support-
ive treatments like blood transfu-
sion for the tumour that had bled
producing "coffee ground" vomi-
tus and "tarry" stool. As Dr Ding's
unfortunate death within a few
months was like, "Shoemakers'
wives areworst shod" and the op-
posite of "The parson always
christens his own child first", all
serving and retired hospital staff
took up annual regular body
checks; a few lives were saved -
by picking cancers early.
嘆一位醫者
死於
癌症
人體內臟器官的惡性腫瘤，起初大多不動聲色，不打招
呼地悄悄襲來，患者不知不覺，蒙在鼓裡，如同一顆隱藏得
很深的定時炸彈，包藏禍心，終於有一天突然爆炸，置人於
死地。更有不少人，對癌症早期出現的一些蛛絲馬跡掉以輕
心，以為沒有什麼大不了，以致最終錯過治療時機，而鑄成
大錯。本院有一位老前輩醫生，就是因為太麻痹大意，被癌
魔奪去生命。
從丁醫生溘然離世談起
有道是，天有不測之風雲。誰也沒有料到，本院有一位健康
情況甚佳、平素很少鬧病的丁醫生，突然身患癌症，醫治無效，
溘然離開人世，全院上下愕然，皆唏噓不己，無不為之惋惜與悲
痛。
相處幾十年的這位老同事，從起病、得到確診後住進病房，
到最後壽終正寢，僅僅經歷兩三個月時間，他走得太匆促了！
老醫生“大意失荊州”
丁醫生是本院神經內科老醫生，1959年從醫學院畢業後分配
到市醫院，從事臨床工作將近半個世紀，經他診治的病人，真是
不計其數。
丁醫生平素工作勤勤懇懇，踏踏實實，為人和善敦厚，病人
皆樂意找他看病，稱讚他醫術高明。
可是，丁醫生對自己的病卻不放在心上，歸根究底，他太麻
痹大意了，自以為患的是小毛小病，何作掛齒，不會出什麼亂子
的，因此不肯做必要的檢查，結果讓萬惡的胃癌鑽了空子，真是
“大意失荊州”也！
