SIAN: CHINA'S OLDEST
CITY OF THE "EMPERORS"
Sian, the capital of Shaanxi
province, is a unique walled city,
a giant historical maze where
the Bell Tower overlooks the 4
walls. Most of the trees are of
t he appropr i a t e Ch i nese
Scholar kind. Drum Towers are
on the walls climbing which en-
ables a spectacular view. The
evening of Sian is poetic, "The
beauty of the evening sun is
stunning, even though the night
is coming". The Exhibition Hall
has bronze chariots with 4
horses complete with remark-
ably thin bronze umbrellas over
a standing warrior - all restored
meticulously. Inside the Mauso-
leum of the First Qin Emperor
are the world-renown Terracotta
Armies - all life-like 1:1 size and
armed with real weapons and
armor to protect him even after
death. These were placed in 3
Pits in precise military formation
according to rank and duty, e.
g., Pit No. 2 of 6,000 sq m
housed 1300 warriors, 100
horses and 89 chariots drawn
by 365 horses, a l l to be
unearthed. The Terracotta Fig-
ures could be even more spec-
tacular had General Xiang Yu
not set fire to the tomb shortly
after the Emperor's death. Even
so, the remains witness the
power and monumental military
achievement of the First Qin
Emperor.

——中國最古老的“帝王”城市
想過來中國最古老的城市西安看看嗎？從商周的鎬京，
到秦始皇的咸陽，再到隨後的長安，直至今日的西安，在這
座曾經是13個王朝京都的歷史迷宮面前，你無法不感覺到自
己的渺小。
中國遠古帝王的氣派
當年克林頓遊兵馬俑，在震驚於中國遠古帝王的氣派之餘，
也不失時機地幽了一默，轉身對著身後的兵俑說了句“解散”。而
在本地人眼中，這裡小吃多，玉器多，美女多。與此同時這裡建
築亂，交通亂，觀念亂，這真是一座充滿矛盾的城市。雖然西安
和北京一樣是格局最工整的中國城市，在這座被城牆包圍的城
市，你可以在東南西門看到位於中央的鐘樓。20年前的西安可不
是這樣，作為西方人最嚮往的中國旅遊城市之一，這裡在20年前
就擁有了一批絕對頂極的五星級酒店，咸陽機場很早就可以起降
最大型的飛機。但是20年之後，西安卻像一張被定格的膠片，在
現代和古典之間、在文明和野性之間迷失了自己。
一座歷史的巨大迷宮
和所有年輕的城市不同，西安就是一座歷史的巨大迷宮，這
座城市動人心魄的秦始皇陵墓地宮神秘得讓人絕望，深厚得讓人
害怕，就像一位曾經到過西安的網友評價的那樣：沒有哪個城市
像西安，現代與古代、嶄新與破敗、發展與滯後，交錯得那樣緊
密，對比得那樣鮮明。
相比之西安，我更喜歡西安以前的名字“長安”。也許這樣的
