Nitric Oxide & Health
Ferid Murad, Robert F. Furchgott and Louis J. Ignarro won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology for discovering bloodstream
nitric oxide (NO) induces blood vessel dilatation through an endothelium-derived relaxing factor: In simple terms, NO is the body's
signaling molecule: for dilatation of blood vessels to enhance circulation; reduction of episodic hypertension; suppressing formation
of "bad cholesterol" (LDL); promoting "good cholesterol" (HDL) to prevent atherosclerosis; delaying blood vessel damage due to
diabetes; suppressing cancer cells; promoting our daily sleep-wake cycle: deficiency may predispose to senile dementia (
β
-amyloid
protein plaque formation); sustaining penile erection ("Viagra" reduces NO depletion); enhancing killing of micro-organisms by white
blood cells; promoting inflammation and tissue repair; promoting killer T-lymphocytes. NO may be increased by taking moderate
exercises and anti-oxidants; more fish, meat, eggs, milk nuts, cereals oats, peanuts, veggies, fruits, black chocolates, green tea, wine,
etc.; avoiding French fries, biscuits, desserts (trans-fatty acids and cholesterol). Above all, learn to relax!
