Does DHA Really Make a Smarter Brain?
DHA (Docosa-Hexaenoic Acid) is for development of the brain; optimal function of the eyes and prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD),
the WHO recommends, for babies, 20 mg/kg of DHA; 40 mg/kg for premature ones; for health adult, 220 mg a day – all from a normal
diet (DHA is easily absorbed) or breast feeding. All fish have significant DHA, not just deep-sea ones. Alpha-linolenic acid in nuts also
turns into DHA. An American Journal of Medicine publication queried the benefit of DHA supplements during pregnancy. The Oregon
Health & Sciences University found no benefit of supplementing DHA for established AD. Over dose of any nutrient upsets our body
balance; also has toxic effects. Our Ministry of Health is soliciting public opinion on permitted addition of DHA only to children’s food
items, specifying the upper limit and labeling as, “For children only”. As an unsaturated fatty acid, excess DHA may reduce immunity
after oxidation of DHA. Kids may even have insomnia due to excessive DHA. Suboptimal clotting may result from platelet aggregation
suppression and reduction of clot formation. Excess DHA is actually harmful!
