ECMO (extra-corporeal mem-
brane oxygenation) supplements
mechanical ventilators of intensive
care units (ICU). It pumps blood out
for gaseous exchange (functioning
as a lung) until the patient's diseased
heart and lungs recover. As the suc-
cessful applications are mainly con-
fined to newborns, the indications
of ECMO are specifically for the new-
borns or paediatric patients.
However, in Zhongshan Peoples'
Hospital, a unique example on the
application of the ECMO has their
own success stories as applied in the
operating theatres and emergency
rooms. For example, a 39-year old
man with coronaries admitted in
deep coma and without any respira-
tion had a breathing tube put into
the trachea (windpipe) for mechani-
cal ventilation purposes. Then, after
a 4-min. run of the ECMO, his heart
started beating again; some hours
later, ECMO could be withdrawn and
mechanical ventilation continued.
After a coronary bypass operation,
he was out of the ICU 4 days later;
went home 10 days later. Dr Li Bin
Fei says one of their ECMO is placed
in the Operating Theatre; another, in
the Emergency Room; even a por-
table ECMO is also being planned.

一位外來打工的26歲李德娥，因患感冒後併發「暴發性
心肌炎」，導致心肌收縮無力，使心臟失去了泵血功能，患
者極有可能迅速死亡。在生命垂危的緊急關頭，中山市人民
醫院的急診醫生，立即請麻醉科會診及參與搶救，麻醉科
正、副主任張志剛、李斌飛醫生，出動了他們醫院的救命設
備－ECMO，同時配合強心和抗病毒藥物治療，終於將頻
臨死亡的李德娥從死神的魔掌中奪了回來。半個月後，李德
娥終於走出了醫院的大門。訪者為了進一步瞭解ECMO在
搶救病人關鍵時刻，究竟如何能有起死回生的奇效，因此特
遠赴中山市人民醫院麻醉科作專訪，並為讀者報導 ECMO
救命顯奇蹟的有關情況。
多次出現心臟停跳
一位在中山市某手袋廠打工的26歲李德娥，感冒一周後的某
一天晚上，忽然感到面色蒼白、胸悶氣急、頭暈乏力，同伴見狀
趕緊呼叫救護車，將她送到中山市人民醫院急診室，剛到醫院她
就暈倒了。經急診室醫生檢查後，被診斷為「暴發性心肌炎」。該
病可導致心肌無效收縮，使心臟失去泵血功能，如果不及時搶
救，患者極有可能迅速死亡。在生命緊急垂危關頭，任何藥物已
回天乏術，因為只有心臟正常跳動，才能保證她有接受治療的機
會，而她已經
