Taking Yogurt Also Has “Do’s and Don’ts”
As milk may cause diarrhea in those intolerant to the lactose content, yogurt, made by fermenting lactose with lactobacilli, is preferred,
especially as the nutritional value is almost as good. Lactobacilli are also beneficial to our gut. When taken on an empty stomach, the
high stomach acidity may destroy the lactobacilli – take after food or at night but brush the teeth to avoid tooth caries. Sour milk drinks
are merely thirst quenchers with only 1/3 of the nutritional value of yogurt. Excessive yogurts lead to too much stomach acid – limit to
1-2 cups a day. Although bowels are stimulated, taking with antibiotics would kill the lactobacilli in yogurt. Those with stomach ache or
diarrhea, diabetes, atherosclerosis, cholecystitis and pancreatitis or children under 1 year of age should avoid yogurts. For the Calorie-
conscious, take low-fat yogurt. As preserved meats contain nitrites that may form nitrosamines in the presence of yogurt, avoid taking
them together; antibiotics and yogurt also do not mix. Warming of yogurts should only be up to 45oC. Enjoy your yogurt!
