Approaching “Artificial Life”
Craig Venter, a genome pioneer, had made news when his project "Synthia" had created artificial life in the laboratory,
alarming many professionals but he opined that his work was very beneficial, as it would pave the way for bacterial
"factories" to be set up to manufacture artificial organisms designed for specific tasks, e.g., production of medicines,
agricultural agents or clean biofuels. He read the DNA of a bug and recreated it piece by piece by "stitching" and
inserted into a different bacterium and allowed it to grow as a new species. Many others are worried that such
techniques could well be abused to create the ultimate biological weapon, or, could even lead to millions being wiped
out by a plague in scenes akin to those in movies. The ETC group, a technology watchdog with a special interest in
synthetic biology, opined that this is a "Pandora's Box" moment, like the splitting of the atom or the cloning of Dolly
the sheep; people have to manage the widespread implications arising from this alarming experiment. Others are
very concerned with the great danger in these scientists' ambitions for total and unrestrained control over nature: like
"playing God".
