Emperor Qianlong’s Secrets of His Healthy Living
The Qing Emperor Qianlong lived up to 89 years, with the longest reign of 60 years. As a great worrier, he conquered the
Dzungars and even the Gurkhas from Nepal (current name); controlled Jinchuan, Myanmar and Vietnam. Although such
heavy military exercises were at the expense of the Qing Dynasty, he survived well, his secrets: regular physical exercises,
hunting, travelling, a regular life style - getting up early, avoid excessive eating and drinking, liked drinking tea and healthy
foods. He went south of the Yangtzekiang 6 times, averaging 111 days each. His archery was legendary. He had diversified
habits, e.g., music, poetry, calligraphy, etc. Wherever he went, he wrote poems (totaling 43,630) – helped to cultivate his
character and contribute to a healthy living. Macartney, a British Trade Ambassador remarked on his surprising physique:
at the age of 83, he looked like 60. His magic potions were mainly for strengthening the spleen; nourishing the kidney and
endocrine systems; helping to strengthen vigor and the Yang, etc. Above all, Emperor Qianlong believed firmly the saying,
"Sacred people consider labour as a blessing; leisurely life, a disaster".
