Directing TCM to the Frontiers of World Medicine: an Interview with Prof Tu Jian, Inaugural

Prof Tu opines that, as the National directive, the task of integrating Western with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has considerable difficulties
but is obviously better for patients and the profession alike. For diagnosis, Western medicine documents local or microscopic abnormalities but TCM,
macroscopic view. Integration merely by adding Western to TCM is not the point, as, independently, both can manage the same patient. Better to
explore why different mechanisms and approaches could both be curative. SARS treated by high-dose steroids had high mortalities and serious side
effects; TCM herbs prescribed according to illness types: wind, cold, heat, wetness, torridity, dryness and heat; in winter, herbs prescribed are mainly
“warming”; in summer, “cooling”: even though the virus had been successfully isolated, noting accumulated pestilence experience seemed more ideal.
Nevertheless, as much experience is required to characterize the pulse, there is no reason why TCM physicians cannot use the microscope, e.g., to
characterize sperms for infertile men, or to test urine for pregnancy. It’s an arduous road for integration!
