CULTIVATE A SUNSHINE MODE: GENERATE A HAPPY LIFE
Psychological disturbance may have disastrous results, e.g., campus shootings, suicides, etc. In China, suicide among university
students is increasing from 2002 to 2006. As life frustrations are not well managed, serious problems make problems even
worse. As life is full of unhappiness or failures, be philosophical to avoid tension, anxiety, or anger – often leading to irrational
acts. In their publication “Frustration and Aggression”, Dollard & Dood pointed out that frustration led to aggression – “direct”,
e.g., campus shooting or “diversional”, e.g., as described in the Chinese classic “Water Margin”: anger was diverted to furniture,
tea sets. Others let go their aggression on other innocent persons coming in their way. With Baker’s groundwork on emotional
disturbance, Ellis in the 1950’s had therapy based on activating event, belief, consequence, dispute and effect, e.g., while very
thirsty in a desert, even half a glass of water should encourage: drink it and try to leave the desert. Frustration may begat
unusual accomplishments, e.g., by Beethoven after he was deaf. Edison tried >1,000 times in vain before he invented the
electric bulb. Let the sun shine!
