BREAST FEEDING IS STILL BETTER
As the melamine catastrophe involved 50,000 babies and 4 deaths, a rethink on breast feeding is timely. Historically, our
tradition was first challenged by “Klim”, from a surplus after the 2nd world war. Now, local and foreign firms exaggerate the
advantages of cow’s milk, hailing the advantages of additives. Free samples for newborns at hospitals are to entice them into the
taste of cow’s milk. However, breast milk, especially the early colostrum, has the immune secretory IgA (sIgA), lactoferritin,
immuno-active white cells – a strong armed force conferring immunity to the infant, e.g., breast feeding reduces infantile intestinal
infections; according to a WHO report, diarrhea and death rates are higher by 15-25 times for formula-fed infants. Breast milk is
fresh, clean and has the right temperature, let alone bonding and emotional advantages for mother and infant alike; those infants
breast fed for <3 months would have suboptimal mental development. As breast feeding also ensures better contraction of the
mother’s womb and reduces her risk of breast cancer, it is the duty and the privilege of all mothers to breast feed their newborn
babies!
