THE TOOTHPASTE: MUCH
ADO ABOUT NOTHING?
As even toothpaste may af-
fect our health, we must not
overlook this item we use daily.
Although the banning of Chinese
toothpaste containing diethylene
glycol is mostly political (only ex-
cessive diethylene glycol of >0.

State Administration of Quality
still barred the use of diethylene
glycol in toothpaste. Fluoride
toothpastes protect our teeth;
are safer than water fluoridation
employed in the past. However,
youngest children may swallow
the toothpaste and end up in
fluorosis of teeth despite the low
fluorine content of drinking
water. Children <3 years old
s h o u l d a v o i d f l u o r i d e
toothpastes; even for 4-6 year
olds, be sure that just "pea-
sized" toothpaste of a low-fluo-
ride toothpaste is used. Tooth-
pastes for sensitive gums con-
tain potassium nitrate or stron-
tium chloride but undue sensi-
tivities require a dental opinion.
Whitening toothpastes contain
peroxides or durapatite and
a b r a s i v e s : c a l c i u m
pyrophosphate, silicon dioxide -
these are useful for exogenous
stains, e.g., from tobacco, cof-
fee or tea, etc. and those with
sensitive gums should avoid
using.Moreover, children should
avoid all medicated toothpastes.

隨著中國大陸經濟的崛起，一個原本不太起眼的行業也
迅速發展，這就是牙膏產業。以前默默無聞的小小牙膏，忽
然間成了電視明星，中央電視臺黃金時段價格不菲的廣告常
被小小的牙膏佔領。除了央視以外，各大媒體的牙膏廣告也
十分醒目。細一探究，這些牙膏幾乎都是外商獨資或者合資
產品，價格也隨之扶搖直上，由最早的幾毛錢迅速攀升到幾
塊錢、十幾塊錢。如今，已經有人賣出了20多元的天價，價
格猛漲了近百倍！國產牙膏也迅速覆蓋國外、海外市場⋯⋯
有關牙膏的風波㜫起
幾乎與此同時，有關牙膏的風波㜫起，先是，西班牙領銜拒
絕含氟牙膏和其他含氟產品，歐美各國紛紛效仿，國產牙膏遭遇
第一場國際風波；接著，巴拿馬、多明尼加查出中國牙膏含有二
甘醇，美、日等國、包括香港相繼停售！國家質檢總局為此出頭
說明，根據有關論證，長期使用二甘醇低於15.6%的牙膏不會對人
體健康產生不良影響。國家商務部重申，中國出口牙膏沒有安全
問題，所含二甘醇均在安全範圍之內，不少國外牙膏也含有二甘
醇，按照標準生產的牙膏不會對人體構成威脅，但是外國人依然
不買帳。
氟是什麼東西呢？
牙膏雖小，風波不少，學問不少。其中許多學問非一般人所
知，筆者請教了哈爾濱醫科大學的幾位專家，才略知一二。
引起最早一場風波的含氟牙膏，其實由來已久，最早出於上
個世紀30年代美國。美國人將適量氟化物加入牙膏內，預防齲
齒。
