Psychological Factors of Rumors
With the Internet, rumors spread far and wide, with disastrous consequences. Despite intensive training and experience, our brain is
unable to differentiate messages, especially for those sent to mislead: we could just decide if messages are true or false. We have a
selective attention mechanism for our protection, e.g., focusing attention to fear of certain matters or phenomena; the categorization of
individual figures based on fixed criteria, etc. Negative messages, e.g., causing anger, grief or fear (danger signals) sink well into our
brain. Our tendency is also to ascribe any event to be due to a visible person rather than abstract organizations: the phenomenon of
“internal attribution tendency” in social psychology: would explain why biased messages spread most easily. To decide the truth of a
message: (1) State messages are reliable; call to confirm (2) For credibility, deliberate details are fabricated, exposing it’s false (3) Time
will tell (4) Query those from the less sharp elderly brain and the mentality of “just in case it’s true” (5) Messages with foreign origins
are suspicious!
