Never Ignore Fatal Peanuts
A Chicago Chinese food restaurant was sued for peanut-containing meals killing Katelyn Carlson, 13, with allergy to peanuts: this was
despite warnings to the restaurant. Peanut allergies occur usually in children; constitute 1% of the US population – most prevalent in
US, due to: (1) Possibly “too clean” environments making the immune system immature (2) Probably, much higher alertness in the US
than in China. In Cambridge, UK, an Adenbrook Hospital study found peanuts to be the most important cause of food allergies. Even
a tiny fragment of peanut may trigger the allergy which typically occur in 30 min. Asthmatic attacks are easily aggravated, with facial
swelling, oral cavity ulceration, patches of red, swollen, itchy skin (urticaria) and even acute throat swelling causing shock and death.
For such subjects, any food with traces of peanuts must be avoided – even peanut oil. Desensitization using gradually increasing
amounts is done only under strict medical supervision. As peanut has high fat and Calorie content, take in moderation even without
allergy!
