Mitochondria & Health
In most cells, mitochondria are organelles that generate most of the cells’ supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for chemical energy.
A mitochondrion has an outer and inner membrane (folded as cristae), with matrix inside and many enzymes outside. Mitochondria
is important for: (a) Apotosis, a programmed cell death process (b) As the by-product of ATP formation is free radicals with strong
biochemical reaction to the cell and mitochondria; if incompletely counteracted by superoxide dismutase and catalase: aging results (c)
Alcohol dehydrogenase (in the liver) for detoxifying ingested alcohol (d) Forming precursors of steroids (e) Convert harmful ammonia
formed during protein metabolism to urea: the “urea ammonia cycle”. Suboptimal mitochondria function is associated with senile
dementia, Parkinson’s disease and tumor formation. Have aerobic physical exercises; carefully programmed and gradual exposure to
cold; good posture when walking, running, sitting and standing; build in a limited fasting. Take anti-oxidants, health food and food rich
in anti-oxidants. Do avoid smoking and excessive pressure!
