As 2/3 of us consists of water, better drink, say, boiled tap water 1600-2000ml a day (more for the young, the middle age and the
obese) for daily loss: 350ml through the breath, 500ml, normal sweating, 150ml, normal bowel opening, 1500ml, urine; if not, anti-
diuretic hormone reduces urine output. Water is a good lubricant, a detoxification agent and a solvent (for glucose, amino acids,
oxygen, carbon dioxide, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphates, magnesium etc., and metabolites), water evaporation cools the body.
The acid-base balance and osmolarity are crucial, as low osmolarity, e.g., from dehydration (thirst and scanty urine) or heart failure
(tissue swelling) demands prompt treatments, especially in children with vomiting and diarrhea, iv fluids are required as they have
high metabolic rates. As acute blood loss may cause shock and even death, immediate blood transfusion is mandatory. Through our
capillaries, tissue fluid and lymph (the white blood fluid) bathe our tissues and cells; if these fluids fail to return back to the capillaries,
tissue swelling results. As thirst means dehydration, better drink before thirsty!
