The “Desperate Housewife Syndrome” is Invading Urban Women
The “Desperate Housewives” TV serial was on successful career women frustrated on, e.g., looking after 4 young kids full time; no time
to mind her attractiveness, felt threatened by her husband’s attractive colleagues, etc. In another Beijing TV serial, desperate housewives
had frantic slimming, cosmetic surgery or becoming shopaholics on fashionable items, etc. Despite being well off, they are still bored
and unhappy – due to depression. As in China, around 10% of the population have depression, housewives should not give up their
jobs readily; rather, to mind their feminine inner attraction (including normal sexual life); seek professional help if definite depression;
take part in out-door and sports activities, etc. As mild degrees of depression get better without medication, learn to remind oneself of
the good past memories. Be content: when compared to others, one would begin to realize how lucky one is. Remember, life is bound
to have difficult times alternating with good times – only when difficult times are over would one realize that even difficult times have
their meanings.
