The “Heaven” & “Hell” of Diseases
Toombs had multiple sclerosis but managed to overcome it and wrote the book, "The Meaning of Illness” on patients’ and
physicians’ perspectives. It won the prestigious Edward Goodwin Ballard Prize in Phenomenology. Evelyn Glennie of Scotland,
undoubtedly a world class musician, is a ‘deaf percussionist’ as she became deaf from the age of 8. Liz Taylor deems disease
as a special gift from life. She is not afraid of death – at the age of 12, she fell from horseback when filming "National Velvet";
required repeated hospitalizations; also had a near-fatal pneumonia when filming "Cleopatra". Thus, even getting cancer may
not be as bad as most believe. In 1982, a cancer of the stomach patient had a miraculous cure after high fever; in 1987, a man
with low gamma globulin contracted AIDS but his disease miraculously recovered. Likewise, those with Parkinson’s disease
are unlikely to get cancer; sickle-cell anemia patients seldom get malaria. There are also 5 symptoms that are beneficial: fever,
cough, nose bleed, diarrhea and vomiting. As all encounters have two sides of the story: to us, contracting diseases may not be
“hell”; it could even be “heaven”!
