Why Reiterate: “Infant Formulae Should Not be Labeled as “Humanized”
Despite young mothers’ reluctance to breast feed, cow’s milk differs considerably from human milk, e.g., cow’s milk has 3.3%
protein – 4 x higher than human milk; each 100 g has 800 mg of minerals – also 4 x higher and inappropriate for the infant;
the unsaturated fatty acid content is 2% against 8%; lactose of cow’s milk is 4.8% against 7.0% of human milk. The so-called
“humanized infant formula” only replaces the deficit without reducing the excess compared to human milk that also has taurine
for brain development; more lactose to enhance lactobacilli growth but inhibiting E. coli infection; smaller fat globules together
with lipase enhances fat digestion; more unsaturated fatty acids enhance growth; easily absorbed calcium reduces risks of
rickets; the colostrum has large amounts of immuno globulin A (IgA) antibodies to protect the newborn from gut and airway
infections; also has higher concentration of zinc, copper than cow’s milk – enhances growth of the newborn; as inorganic
salts are less than cow’s milk, it puts less burden to the infants’ kidneys. Thus, modified cow’s milk should not be labeled as
“humanized”, otherwise it is grossly misleading!
