The Standardization & Safety of “Forest Food Items”
Forests have abundant vegetables, food, oil-producing plants and especially medicinal herbs: forests in China constitute the “Treasure
of Medicinal Usage”. Forests are rich in meat (birds and hare), tea leaves, honey, spices, fodder, mineral water, etc., mostly unavailable
outside forests. Forest food are nutritious, contamination-free, valuable: and safe. Validations are for: (1) The environment: coverage
of forest, species present, air, soil and water pollution (2) Harvesting process of cultivated and wild products and regulatory issues (3)
Quality control of product processing (4) Packaging, storage, transport and sales: ensuring freedom from secondary contamination (5)
Quality control issues, using existing standards of China and international ones: ISO-9001 regulatory standards (6) Product sales and
distribution channels: regulatory procedures to enable tracing back the source and origin of the end-products (7) Forest food product
manufacturing enterprise: legal and health requirements. To differentiate between fake and genuine forest products, determine if the
product originated from State-recognized base stations and premium natural environments; check for heavy metals and pesticides
strictly; trace the product back to its origin. In general, better products are purchased in large, reputable outlets.
