Air Pollution Affects Your Longevity
Sulpur dioxide, atmospheric particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, photochemical oxide and heavy metals are all
pollutants. Their effects on our health are: (1) Coal smog irritates the chest (2) Photochemical smog from motor vehicle exhausts is a
stronger irritant (3) Indirectly, pollution worsens greenhouse effect, ozone hole enlarges: skin cancer rate rises. Susceptible population
are babies and kids <12, women of child-bearing age, pregnant women, the elderly and the infirm. From the Lancet: small PM2.5
particulates reduce visibility and disrupt land and air traffic; as smoking is worse, stop it. Ozone pollutes; tiny PM2.5 particulates
can even enter the circulation through the lungs and cause stroke. From another medical journal: with the same PM2.5 size, soot
particulates have 5x higher risk of causing cardio-vascular diseases than petrol or LPG ones; other effects: low birth weights, nervous
system underdevelopment, mental defects, autism and asthma. What can be done: (a) Plan physical exercises according to pollution
index (b) Avoid mid-day exercises (c) Avoid walking in heavy traffics (d) Use air filters when driving (e) Change air filters regularly (f)
Keep room dry to avoid fungal growth and spore formation (g) Avoid smoking premises (h) Use masks.
