Pet Dogs Help to Treat Childhood Autism
A kid with autism is withdrawn and non-communicative, too quiet and sad, uninterested in play nor games for >3 months. In our
Country, autism is increasing: 1:1,000; the male to female ratio is 4:1; it is also the commonest child psychiatric condition – it may
be related to some chemical changes in the brain; or precipitated by prolonged ill treatment, bereavement divorced/separated parents,
too strict a discipline with no family interactions, e.g., far too busy daily schedules precluding adequate interaction. Treatment should
commence before 3 years old; never later than 6. Pet dogs may have amazing results. Yang Yang had a dramatic improvement without
any medications. Mother noticed that, when traveling by public transport, he started to offer his seat to the elderly; he also picked up
trash to the dust bin, let alone much more social and cooperative in class. He had re-learned loving care when caring for his pet dog;
interaction also promoted confidence, trust and responsibility. Thanks to the US child clinical psychologist Levinson, animal-assisted
therapy was introduced in the 1960’s. Ideally, in Western Countries, pet dogs are even allowed in class.
