Jottings on Cloning a Cancer-sniffing Dog
The Kyushu University, Japan found the cancer-sniffing dog “Marine” as trained by a Cancer Sniffing Dog Training Center in Japan to
be 90% reliable. But, resection of the womb of the 6.5 year old Marine precluded any offspring. Prof Lee Byeong-chun of the Seoul
National University, Korea, cooperated with a Korean biotechnology firm to clone Marine. Embryos carrying her specific genetic codes
were implanted to a surrogate mother and 4 puppies were born; to be sent back to Japan for the same training as Marine. Two of these
are sold at 500 million Won each. Dogs’ sniffing power is up to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours and can differentiate skin odor
of diseases, especially lung, breast, prostate and skin cancers. Michelle of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia studied
the odor of basal cell skin cancers for the “e-nose”. At the Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs Research Centre in Aylesbury, England,
Claire Guest has 17 rescue dogs to detect low blood sugar levels before patients faint. It is very remarkable that Queen’s University,
Belfast found 65% with low blood sugar levels had their pets reacting by whining, barking, licking, etc!
