Got Cancer: Shall We Tell Him?
Although international practice respect the cancer patients’ right to know their diagnoses, and that knowing would facilitate
active collaboration on treatment, many cancer patients often associate “cancer” with “death”, especially with their
considerable fear of death, telling frankly may have detrimental effects on the fighting spirit and well being – especially in
China where the religious background is not as strong as in other countries, and that cancer therapies are often painful and
prolonged. An appropriate time to tell partially is 3-4 months after diagnosis: the initial shock and operations are over; cancer
therapies also require collaboration. Use less explicit languages; maintain a good doctor-patient relationship; avoid “tell tale”
signs, e.g., very frequent visits; exceptional dietary freedom and incredible low-key expressions, as “actions speak louder
than words”. Always “break the news” in carefully designed progressive steps; use words like “tumour” rather than “cancer”;
build in hopes whenever feasible; encourage faith and a fighting spirit. Above all, leave enough time to listen patiently to the
patient and/or relatives; give appropriate details on treatments.
