HOWTO NOURISH LIFE IN SUMMER
"Shu" (humid heat) is "yang xie" (positive sunny evil) in summer - feverishness, headache, intense thirst, profuse sweating, heart-
throb, rapid pulse, irritability, etc.; "shi" (damp) is "yin xie" (negative evil): without free flow of beneficial body air, pollution results.
In the long summer, serve food warm; take small, frequent meals; avoid oily/fatty food; spicy food induces sweating and cooling
by evaporation; also stimulates appetite; helps stomach motility and digestion. According to the Emperor's Canon of Medicine
(ECM), dampness evil starts attacking from body's lower parts first. Keep rooms well ventilated but isolated from dampness and
excessive heat. The best humidity is 40-60%; when the temperature reaches >25˚C, the humidity should be around 30%, as high
humidity prevents sweat evaporation for cooling, then, irritability, tiredness, poor appetite ensue; for even lower humidity, the
mucosa of the upper respiratory tract dries up, invites infection. There is a risk of catching a cold with prolonged rests in open air.
Frequent "ins and outs" of air-conditioned premises affect the heart; set the temperature only 5˚C lower and the lowest temperature,
25 ˚C.
