IMMUNE TOLERANCE AND HEALTH
Auto-immune diseases (diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, etc.) destroy our own normal tissues by an excess
of a T-helper lymphocytes (Th17). As an interleukin (IL7) maintains Th17, IL7 receptor antagonists may help to prevent auto-
immune diseases. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infections often become chronic (the "carrier state") as the HBV cannot be eradicated
entirely - also due to immune tolerance, as the immune lymphocytes exhibit a "negative" immune response (as if the antigens are
"transparent") or, a subnormal "positive" immune response to the HBV antigens. As most patients with malignancies also have
immune tolerance: there is a "negative" immune response to tumour antigens, failing to express co-stimulators B7 and escaping
from normal immuo-surveillances. However, by "staining" malignant cells with genes of melanoma cells (that have less immune
tolerance) may help. Moreover, antibodies or drugs reducing patients' Regulator T cells (Treg) may re-establish a "positive"
immune response. Thus, immune tolerance is the key to prevention of auto-immune diseases, eradicating the HBV and control-
ling cancer.
