THE
RAY
OF HOPE
FOR
BLOOD CANCER
Blood cancer
or
leukaemia that
literally
means
"white
blood"
is
the
no.
1 killer
in
adolescents
and
in
kids
especially. Apart
from
surgery
and
radiation therapy, cancer treatment
relies heavily on chemotherapy
-
the
use
ol anti-cancer drugs to
kill
cancer
cells. However,
chemotherapy kills
not
only the cancer
cells
but also
the
normal cells
of
ihe
body, in
this
case,
especially
the
normal bone
marrow
cells
that are
responsible
for
manufac-
turing the
red and
white
blood
cells
as
well as
the
platelets
that are responsible
for blood clotting.
ln
1986, Prof Wang
in
Shanghai
first
discovered
that
an
analogue of vitamin A could
"revert
back" abnormal cancerous white blood
cells to normal again. However, relapse
of
leukaemia nearly
always occur
unless combined with other drugs.
ln
the 70's another Chinese
discovery
found arsenic
compounds
were
ironically effective for certain kinds of
acute leukaemia. Clinicians had tried
the combination of
chemotherapy,
vitamin
analogue
and
arsenic
compounds and documented
better
results than when used
alone.
Unfortunately,
there are
several
types
of
leukaemia, each one requiring some-
what different agents
for
effective
control. Nevertheless, as more
and
more newer agents
are
being
discovered,
it may be possible
to
con-
trol
effectively all
the
different
types of
leukaemia.
