THE MANAGEMENT
OF
DIABETIC BONE & JOINT
DISEASES
Diabetic bone and Joint diseases
refer to
those bone
and
joint abnormali-
ties
arising from
the
deranged
blood
sugar metabolism of diabetes
as well
as
the complications
involving
the
rel-
evant arteries and
nerves.
The average
incidence rate of such bone and joint
diseases amongst diabetics across the
board is
7.5olo.
Most of these
are
male
patients
and
2/3
of
them are aged over
50. Most of them have relatively
long
history
of diabetes, with an average of
10 years;
all
of
them already
have pe-
ripheral neuritis (degeneration of the
nerves of
the
limbs) and
vascular
changes
-
both are complications of
diabetes.
However,
the mechanism
of
the
causation
of such
complications
referable to
the bones
and
joints are
still
little known, except to
say
that
it is
likely
to
be a combination of
a
multitude of
factors
related to
the deranged metabo-
lism of
glucose.
The
key
to
effective
management is prevention by effective
control of diabetes
-
because uncon-
trolled high blood glucose
level would
decrease the bone substance and
in-
crease
calcium
loss through
the
urine.
Take appropriate
nutritional
supplements, especially protein, cal-
cium
and
vitamin
D.
For
advanced
cases, micro-vascular surgery
or a
spe-
cial
lorm of
limb-salvaging traditional
Chinese herbal medicine treatment
available
only in very
specialised
centres.
