DEFIBRILLATOR
CARDIOVERTER:
THE
WEAPONTO REVIVE

Most of us are familiar with
scenes
shown
on
TV serials
like "ER"
-
ln
the
Emergency Room of hospitals, shots of
patients whose hearts
have just
stopped are often revived with Defibril-
lator Cardioverter (DC) paddles
when
the
doctor yelled
loudly,
"Clear!"
and
ap-
plied electric current through the DC to
revive
heart
beats. Even
though
our
heart
continues
to beat for years on end,
any cessation of
the heart
beat means
the end
of
life.
ln
the
body,
there is
a
natural
pace-maker
called
the
"si-
noatrial
node"
that
regulates the fre-
quency of heart beats, working
just
like
an
artificial
pace maker
implanted
into
the
body. However,
as one ages,
or
if
the
system of generation
of
natural
heart
beats
is
affected
by disease, the
heart may stop, e.9., due to degenera-
tion
of
the sinoatrial
node.
Apart from
degeneration,
the
heart may also have
blockage of
the
natural electrical
im-
pulse trom the pace-maker
to
the heart
muscles. ln other patients, there
may
even be uncoordinated contraction of
the heart muscles
-
the so-called "fibril-
lation"
that
makes
the heart
ineffective
as
a
pump. Recently,
the
development
of an
automatic external defibrillator
(AED)
is
a promising portable tool for
lay
defibrillation
- it is safe,
effective and
detects fibrillation automatically
so
that,
even
with
minimal training, the set can
be operated - almost like using a fire
extinguisher before the
liremen
come.
