MODERN MEDICATIONS
FOR
HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE
ln
the past, medications for
high
blood pressure or hypertension were
less
specilic
and
were
mostly diuretics
to accelerate the urinary discharge ol
sodium (together with
water).
Side el-
fects
like
dizziness were
pretty
common
and this may have prevented some pa-
tients with hypertension from continu-
ing on medications so vital for
hyper-
tension
control.Thus,
complications
(e.
9.,
coronaries or
kidney
damage)
may
be induced
as
the blood pressure lailed
to
be controlled. However,
modern
medications for hypertension
have
their
definite roles
in
the continuing
control
of
blood
pressure.
These
newer medi-
cations are now much more specific so
that side effects are significantly
less.
People
who
shun away
from
less spe-
cific
anti-hypertensive
medication
should now come back to their doctors
and
have
their hypertension controlled.
Thus,
severe
complications
due
to
un-
controlled
high blood
pressure would
be
reduced to
the
minimum. Diuretics are
still used
but
to
a
lesser extent; usually
the
milder (and potassium sparing)
forms are
now used.
Although the
so-
called "beta-blockers" are more specific
for
hypertension, those with
heart fail-
ure
and
"chronic obstructive airways
disease (COAD)" may be
contra-
indicated. Always consult your doctor
as he would decide if these or newer
preparations like calcium channel
an-
tagonists
or
the angiotensin-converting
enzyme inhibition
(ACEI)
or the
so-
called alpha-blockers, should be used.
