CHINESE ANTI.CANCER
DRUGS
ARE MAKING
ITS
WAY
ln China,
the
research on
Chinese
anti-cancer drugs has been going
on
tor 50 years. However,
only during the
last
10
or
more
years
has
it
swung
away
from traditional Chinese
medicine
(TCM) concepts
of
tumour suppression
and adopt
the
combination
of
advanced
technology
with
TCM
values
to
under-
take
clinical
implementation
and
research. Currently,
more
studies
are
focussed
on biological
response
modifiers
that tackle
mainly
body
immunity,
e.9.,
Yun-zhi, cordyceps,
etc.
TCM is
well
known
for
its impressive
holistic approach
-
the
best
treatment
available.
The success potential
is
thus
very great. An intra-venous
arsenic
preparation was developed
in
China
according to an
ancient
Chinese
formula
containing arsenic poison.
PC SPES,
as
marketed by an American firm,
contains
TCM
herbs
that
have
oestrogen
(female hormone) properties
and may be suitable for very advanced
prostate
cancer.
The active ingredients
of
a
TCM herb (Frutus Camptothecae
Acuminatae), a remedy
for gut
tumours
in
China, have been isolated
and
approved
for anti-cancer use
by the
FDA of USA in 1996, with tremendous
commercial prospects. With
the
continuation
ot this trend, in
20-30
years' time,
the
mainstay
of
anti-
cancer drugs would
be
from
TCM herbal
preparations
rather than
from chemicals
as is at present.
