RAY
OF HOPE
FOR
ADVANCED
CANCER
PATIENTS
According
to
principles of
"Evidence-based
Medicine", the resection of
a
small
number
of distant
metastases (secondaries) to organs
like
the
lungs, the
liver or
the
brain,
would
not only improve quality
of
life
but
also enhance the patient's survival period.
Recently,
precise
stereotactic
radiation
therapy
(SRT) has
become
an alternative to surgery
- even
the equipment for SRT
are
named
as so-and-so
"knife", even
though only
X-
rays
are employed. Moreover,
in line
with modern multi-
modality principles
for
cancer management, modalities
like
chemotherapy may
reduce
the number
and
the size
of secondaries and/or
the
primary tumour so
that
SRT
becomes
feasible.
Other modalities that combine
ap-
propriately with SRT are: hyperthermia (heat therapy),
cryotherapy
(cold
therapy),
and
arterial
interventional
therapy (artificial disturbance
of
the blood supply to the
tumour). Moreover, it is prudent to combine
these
"de-
structive"
Western
modalities
with
highly selected tra-
ditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbs
that
have been
shown to enhance the patient's well being or the
im-
mune status. Some
of
these TCM herbs also
have
anti-
angiogenesis properties on the tumour. At
the
lnte-
grated Clinic of
the
Hong
Kong
Association lor
Healthcare, there are good examples
on
the applica-
tion
to
truly advanced cancers. All cancer patients seen
at
the
Clinic are assessed by
a
team
with
international
expertise; treatment
strategy,
tumour localization,
ra-
diation therapy planning, dose prescription are all done
with thorough discussion
on
the individual case.

taken care
of. Moreover,
as the course
of
SRT is only a few weeks long,
it
is
much less disturbing to normal
life

conventional
irradiation that often takes 2 months to complete. As
the
SRT
X-ray beam
is also
very much
more precise,
this
is
a
realistic
ray
of
hope to the
patient
with
advanced
cancer.
