THE REMARKABLETRACE
ELEMENTS
INTHE
HUMAN
BODY
Despite the minute quantities of
the 70
trace
elements,
at least
14
of
these
are essential
to life, e.9.,
iron,
copper, zinc, manganese, iodine,
etc.
They
are part of
metabolic enzymes
required for
essential body metabolisms
and
immunity. Various
trace elements
have
to be present
in
fixed proportions;
any
excess
or lack of them
leads to
disease. lodine
is
essential
for thyroid
hormone
-
deficiency leads hypothyroid-
ism
with
profound
functional
changes.
Growth hormone is
linked
to zinc
and
copper
metabolism.
Vitamin
B12
contains cobalt; haemoglobin,
iron;
vitamin
E,
zinc and selenium
are for
cell
membrane stabilisation. Zinc
is
required
for the
synthesis
of
protein
and
enzymes. Trace
elements are delicately
related
to
the nervous system -
too
much or too
little
results
in
functional
disturbances.
To
the endocrine system,
excess
of
trace elements
is
detrimental.
Our immunity relies on
adequate
supply
of
iron,
zinc,
manganese and
selenium. Some authorities
believe
that
dementia
may be related
to the
lack
of
aluminium. Trace elements also
regulate
free radicals
in
the
body.
Above
all, with a
balanced
diet, there is
no
need
to take
in
trace element supple-
ments
-
the excess
of
these
is harmful,
e.9.,
too
much iron harms
the
liver;
too
much zinc reduces immunity; too much
manganese
harms
the nervous system,
etc.
