The Thyroid Gland & Health
Thyrotoxicosis is the excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, e.g., Graves disease, an auto-immune phenomenon: presents with
thyroid swelling, protrusion of eyeballs, palpitation, fine tremor of hands, excessive sweating, tiredness, agitation, weight loss, etc.;
early management is required to prevent the deadly thyroid crisis. Hypothyroidism is the inadequate secretion of thyroid hormones;
in adults, a state of tissue swelling occurs (myxoedema) occurs; in the newborn, cretinism causes under-development, severe mental
retardation and abdominal swelling. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, another auto-immune phenomenon, causes initial enlargement, then
hypothyroidism sets in when the swelling subsides. Solitary thyroid nodules are more likely than multiple nodules to be malignant,
especially when there is progressive enlargement, neck node enlargement, etc. Keep your psychological balance; have a balanced
diet; take appropriate amounts of iodine in food; be aware of the effects of female hormones on the function of the thyroid gland; avoid
radioactive sources: especially to the neck in the young; have timely checks, especially pregnant mothers, or those planning to give
birth. Consult your doctor!
