Bionic Eyes: Development and Prospects
Intense interest in “bionic eye” spurred tremendousely after a kid had both his eyes brutally enucleated in China. According
to Boahen of Stanford University, the crust of the matter is we do not really understand the delicate operation of the retina (the
“photographic film”) of the eyeball: it is more like part of the brain rather than just a light detecting device – in our retina, we have 130
million light-sensing cells but considerable filtering is required when feeding these data to a more limited number of neurons in our
optic nerve. Thus, the artificial silicon retina (ASR) has a similar ability of sensing light and also processing the data. Heat generation
is solved by clever electronic manipulation of mass data. But, for good resolution, it may takes a few more years. Yet, with confidence
on the ASR, there is good prospects and even other pioneers, e.g., Zrenner (of Germany), Dobelle (of University of Pennsylvania) ,
Humayun (of University of Southern California) and the Dr Chow Brothers (of Optobionics) would probably subscribe to Boahen’s
Concepts. The future is ours to “see”!
