Poisonous Food Items on the Dinner Table
Some common food items may be poisonous: (1) Almonds have cyanides, especially raw or bitter ones; it is illegal in the US to sell
raw almonds; even apricot seeds are poisonous: never take or chew the raw seeds – it’s like raw almonds! (2) Potatos: the roots have
solanine, a potentially deadly poison; do not eat potatoes that have turned green or are sprouting – have glycoalkaloid poison (3) Four
season green beans may be poisonous unless well cooked; avoid it uncooked, e.g., as in salad (4) Tomato: unripe (green) ones (even
raw ones) have solanine (5) Apples: the seeds have cyanide (6) Cherries: although a versatile fruit, the leaves and seeds have prussic
acid: avoid sucking the seeds (7) Mushrooms: as they may well be poisonous, do not take them if there is any doubt whatsoever: not
worth it (8) Pufferfish: although very delicious, it has a deadly poison tetrodotoxin (9) Left-overs: Although environmentally friendly,
taking left-overs risks taking in nitrites being produced overnight by bacteria: “enterogenous cyanosis” ensues as absorbed nitrites
affect the oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin in the blood: potentially lethal.
