Why the Ghost of “Plasticizers” Would Not Go Away?
On food additives, there was an infamous industrial softening agent containing di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) used in Taiwan as
a clouding agent; in China, “Winebibber” white wine was found to have plasticizer: may impair male sexual functions or cause female
pre-maturity; could even be carcinogenic. But, plasticizers, especially phthalates, are actually omnipresent: in almost any plastic
product. The Chinese Academy of Sciences found the underground water of Beijing had n-butyl phthalate; ground water, dioctyl
phthalate. In 2005, the EU prohibited phthalates in toys. Tongji University found DEPH and other phthalates in plastic utensils, sealing
bags, etc.; many food items, especially dry goods, have phthalates. As plasticizers are widely used in industry, Fudan University found
80% of 103 Shanghai suburb residents had plasticizer in their blood! We do have regulatory (but imperfect) rules, as even the WHO
does not have firm guidelines. EU countries have already banned phthalates in food packaging materials but not in China. Fortunately,
new plasticizers, e.g., tributyl and acetyl tributyl citrates are in the pipeline.
