Would Vitamin & Mineral Supplements Increase Our Risks of Death?
Dr. Tomi-Pekka Tuomainen, of the University of Eastern Finland reported 1,800 residents 62-74 taking vitamins / supplements but had
higher death rates: in line with a recent study from the University of Minnesota – historically, vitamins have not been a straightforward
issue; even now, there is no authoritative answer. Initially, small amounts of vitamins and minerals were found to be vital for preventing
certain diseases, e.g., vitamin A for night blindness; C, for scurvy, etc.; a Canadian study also found vitamin C supplements helped
to prevent tophi formation. Yet, vitamins are like a 2-edged sword – too much are toxic, e.g., >1 million international units of vitamin
A is definitely toxic in adults; the same goes for indiscriminate use of cod liver oil for children. The Journal of the American Medical
Association published a 7-year study on 9,500 patients with vascular disease or diabetes supplemented by vitamin E 400 IU/day but
had higher risks of heart failure. It is best to take well-balanced diets to obtain various vitamins and minerals, unless such supplements
are prescribed by your doctor.
