Blood and Our Health.
Our red blood cells (RBCs) transport oxygen; anemia is due to deficiency in the essential iron, e.g., after excessive bleeding. Replace
iron! As pernicious anemia is the lack of intrinsic factor for absorption, B12 is injected. Those with an inborn error of glucose-6-
phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may be predisposed (e.g., by broad beans) to hemolytic jaundice (excessive RBC
destruction). White blood cells (WBCs) attack micro-organisms promptly: protection from pneumonia (and even clotting deficiencies).
Excessive radiations induce leukaemia. Platelets are for clotting; deficiency leads to bruises or even frank internal bleeding; too many
platelets results in abnormal clotting, pathological clots (thrombus) forms, strokes or deep vein thrombosis of the leg. Our red bone
marrow manufactures all blood cells: the “pluripotent stem cell”: abnormalities end up with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), with, e.g.,
anemia. The safest bone marrow transplant is autologous: transfusion of own purged and stored marrow, with no rejection. The future
of protein quantity and quality (metabolomics analysis) of diseases is bright.
