Beware of “Air-Cond Sickness”: 4 Steps for Best Health
Although air conditioning (AC) give immense comfort, note signs of “AC Sickness”: (1) Coughing, sneezing
and running nose; central AC is linked to Legionnaire’s disease: after a latent period of 2-12 days, fever,
chills, muscle ache, dry cough: serious! (2) When too cold, blood vessels supplying joints may contract,
painful shoulders or back ensues (3) As AC may reduce negative ions, the brain may be affected: dizziness,
“seeing stars” and forgetfulness (4) Dry skin due to prolonged AC: easily cause itchiness; excessive carbon
dioxide of re-circulated air may cause red, itchy eyes. For prevention of “AC sickness”: (a) Regulate the
AC temperature to 26-27oC, or 5oC below ambient temperature; for overnight, 1-2oC higher; at no time
should it be <24oC; for the chronically ill, never march into a cold AC room when drenched in sweat (b)
Through a systematic massage sequence, knead and rub various muscles, especially hands and feet (c) As
our digestive system is affected by AC, take tomato (e.g., tomato soup) has lycopene: suppresses bacterial
growth; malic acid and citric acid help digestion; take vinegar to boost our stomach acid, enhance appetite
and digestion; its acetic acid enhances metabolism, refreshes energy, prevents artery atherosclerosis and
hypertension (d) Drink a cup of hot raw ginger tea: suits almost everybody!
