CANTHETHEORY
OF
TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
MEDICINE BE
LINKEDTO
DNA
EXPRESSIONS?
The
tendency
for the
development
of many
diseases,
e.9.,
coronaries,
high
blood pressure and cancers are related
to
genes. lt
is interesting
that the
rela-
tionship
between
the
"kidney" and the
"body essence" has been mentioned
in
ancient Traditional Chinese medicine
(TCM) writings and how all these origi-
nated
from the
parents.
The
holistic
concept
of
TCM
is
now being related
to
health, longevity and
disease
at
the
sub-
cellular or molecular
level.
TCM genetic
studies
proved that
deliberate
and
acute
terror and panic induction caused "kid-
ney
deficiency"
in
pregnant
mice
whose
offspring
also
had similar deficiencies.
With
their postulation that such changes
occurred
at
the molecular
level, a fol-
low-up study identified
(with
"gene
hybridization"
techniques)
1
0
related
loci.
Another significant achievement
is
genetic functional grouping according
toTCM
principles,
e.9.,
to identify which
genes
are
related to the
TCM concept
of
"kidney
deficiency"
rather
than
to
immunity or biochemical concepts of
Western
medicine. Research on the
TCM concept ol
"kidney
deliciency" has
gone on for 50 years. lnitial
success was
going from the cellular to the molecular
or sub-cellular
levels,
e.9., studies
on
specific c-fos (a molecular
immuno-
activity
expression).TheseTCM genetic
research
activities can actually
be
connected
to
the DNA
level.
Although
all such work is
still
in its
infancy,
the
potential for performing many
more
such
studies are
substantial
and
certainly
realistic.
