Chronic kidney deficiency is
a
syndrome that may
be
the end result
ol
various chronic diseases.
Mallunction-
ing of waste excretion, water and elec-
trolyte (e.9.,
sodium
and
potassium)
regulation, acid-base balance,
etc.
lt
is
remarkable
that in
traditional
TCM
writings, there
is no
term that
is
equiva-
lent to
the Western
one of
"kidney
failure". Only an analogy can
be
drawn
as
based
on similar clinical
presen-
tations. Nevertheless, there
is
a
rela-
tively
good agreement on similar
disease entities
-
deficiency in positive
body factors,
e.9.,
deficiency
in
qi,
blood, yin and yang; excess
of
nega-
tive
body
factors, e.9.,
water, damp,
blood
stasis or
even
with
infection
thrown
in.
All
in
all,
it is a
very
protean
development, e.9., factors leading to
glomerulo-nephritis (infection/degen-
eration of individual kidney filters) often
originated
from
contracting wind, cold,
damp, heat or related to skin infections
and boils; pyelitis (infection
of
the urine
collecting
system), atherosclerosis
(hardening)
of the
kidney arteries,
kidney stones, polycystic kidneys, etc.,
are thought to be related to damp/heat,
stasis
of
phlegm,
accumulation
of
sediments, water retention, etc.
Be-
cause of
these
long-standing evils, the
body
vitality
is
damaged and
even the
functional regulation
of
the lungs
and
the spleen
are
also
affected;
the
blad-
der
is
deranged
and
the
body
damp and
impurities (metabolites) accumulates,
eventually causing intoxication
by
water
and
phlegm.
