BESEARCH ON PRECIPITATING
FACTORS
FOR
THE PROGRESSION
OF EARLY/INTERMEDIATE
CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE
AND
THE INTERFERING ACTION OF
CIHCULATION RESTORING TCM
HERBS
Chronic
renal
failure (CRF) refers
to deficiency
ol
the
kidney function.
Cunently, there is no simple and etfec-
tive treatment
for
progressing
CRE
The
poor
prognosis
adds a
huge
strain
not
only on medical facilities
but
also socio-
economic
provisions
of
society.
ln
China,
the
high
incidence
rate
ol50-100
per million population per year adds an
ever-cumulative burden on existing kid-
ney dialysis facilities. Hence,
much
research focuses on the feasibility of
preventing or slowing down of
the
pro-
gression
of
early/intermediate
CRF.
The
precipitating factors of CRF are inap-
propriate
high-protein
diet
(>0.59/Kg),
uncorrected
high blood pressure, cho-
lesterol
and
uric
acid
levels, acid-base
or electrolyte
imbalance
and
infection.
ln
China, non-dialysis
management
methods
for
CRF are also implemented
but
these still have unsolved problems.
Apparently,
onlyTCM
treatment
ot
CRF
has
the
best
prospects, especially when
current problems of standardizing end-
points of treatment results,
unifying
formulas
and
treatment
courses,
collecting "evidence-based
medicine"
data, let
alone studying
the
actual
mechanisms ol action that are definitely
required for preventing possible drug
interference
with other
current
lreat-
ments of
the
patients. Nevertheless,
studies
show
that herbs
like dan-shen
improves the micro-circulation, strength
the
phagocytosis of
the
reticulo-endot-
helial system and promote the eradica-
tion
of
immuno-complexes - all these
serve
to
reduce
the
damage
lo
the
immunity. Much
more work
is
still
demanded.
