Chronic nephritis has
many
dilfer-
ent causes. ln general, it runs an unre-
lenting course and
the
ultimate
prog-
nosis
is
poor.
lt
can
arise lrom
the
kidney itself,
at
the
individual filter units
of the
kidney
-
chronic
glomerulo-
nephritis. Or else it is part and partial
of other
chronic
diseases.
Recently,
much discussion
is
on-going
regarding
the combination of
the Western
and
Chinese methods
of
management.
Conceptually. as
this
is a
very
serious
disease,
relying
solely
on
just
one
school of thought,
e.9.,
TCM, would
be
imprudent.
Moreover,
the
combination
brings in independent concepts,
e.9.,
supplementing the deficiency of
posi-
tive body factors and to
avoid
the nega-
tive body factors
of the
TCM
concept.
Moreover,
the
TCM concept of clearing
the blood stasis
in
the kidney system
of
the
body may bring hope to slow down
the
kidney failure. Much thought
has
have
already been directed towards the
combination with Western drugs.
lt
is
interesting
to
note
that, apart from
the
well
known anti-hypertensives
pre-
scribed to
bring
down blood
pressure,
other
Western
drugs
may
also
clear
"blood stasis"
(the
vaso-dilators); some
would
thin out the
blood (the anti-
coagulants) and yet others
may act
directly on clots
(the thrombolytics).
However,
the
indications
for
these
agents are significantly different from
that
of
TCM.
Nevertheless,
this
shows
there
is
a reasonable prospect
for
com-
bining TCM with
Western
medicine.
