Hypertension,
or
high
blood
pressure, is a very common disease.
When there
is
prolonged hypertension,
even the
arteries
inside
the kidneys
may
become atherosclerotic
or
hardened.
As the abnormality of the
arteries
become more severe,
even
the
blood
supply to
the
relevant kidney would be
significantly
aflected. Moreover, as the
kidneys have
to do
more work
ol
excreting all
the
metabolites of most
of
the anti-hypertension drugs taken,
this
may be
the
last straw
lor failing kidneys.
The worst
is
failing to control
the
blood
pressure, so that after a period of 5-10
years'time,
there would be ineversible
pathological
changes
at the
small
arteries
of
the kidneys. A partially dam-
aged
kidney
may start to
secret a
hor-
mone that would further increase the
blood pressure
-
a
vicious cycle thus
forms. Clinically, any abnormality
in
the
urine
output
or
unusual
trequency,
especially at
night, must be discussed
with your
doctor. He may
also
be able
to find protein
in
the urine or
a
raised
blood urea
level - all
these findings may
signify that there
is
already early
kid-
ney damage. At the
very
least, these
should be noted and re-checked seri-
ally as time goes
by.
According to
US
statistics, as many
as

0-15% of those
with high blood pressure would
die
