higher standards
ol
living, diseases like diabetic and
uric
acid (goul) kidney failures are on
the
rise.
These
may benefit
from
a combi-
nation
of
Western and traditional
Chinese medicine
(TCM) therapies.
Kidney failure due
to
lupus (an auto-
immune disorder)
may also
benefit from
combined
management.
The
progress
of
some cases
of
failure
may slow
down
or even be
arrested; the requirement for
kidney dialysis may be
delayed. As
there
are
also
other
causes, albeit
rarer,
of
kidney
failure,
e.9.,
those due to mul-
tiple
myeloma
(a
bone
marrow
malignancy), amyloidosis
(a
degenera-
tive
disease) having
quite
different
modalities
of
treatment,
it
is
highly
worthwhile to
make
a careful
differen-
tiation regarding the diagnosis accord-
ing to the symptomatology and other
criteria. Yet,
other causes of kidney fail-
ure can even be iatrogenic (caused
by
human beings themselves). This should
certainly
be
avoided at all costs.
A
very
well
known case of such an incident
is
that occurring in a
Belgian slimming
centre
where
TCM
herbs containing
aristolochic acid that
is
well
known
to
cause kidney
lailure
unless
the
recom-
mended
dose
of
the herbs
is
carefully
observed. As herbs can
have
varying
contents
of
the toxic
substance
depending on
the
procurement
and
preparation,
it pays
for
us
to consult the
expert professionals whenever
herbs
having any potentials of affecting
the
kidney function
are
involved.
