Diabetes
is of
2 main types
-
I
and
ll.
Type
I
has
a
strong
genetic
component, an acute
onset.
lt is insu-
lin dependent
and
mostly occurs
in
the
paediatric,
youth
and
adolescent
groups;
type
ll
is
insidious, non-insulin-
dependent and
found
mostly in middle
to
old
age.
Unfortunately,
type
ll
diabetes
has now
a
tendency to affect
younger and younger patients.
ln
Tokyo
students (1970-94),
the
incidence
of
type
I
diabetes was steady
-
the
peak age for
females was
10-13
and for males,
12-15;
type
ll
diabetes
began to appear
after the
age of
1
0
and
reaches
at
the age of
14, a
higher peak
than type
l.
It
was alarming that 70%
ol
these patients were
over-weight.
This was
due
to
the
combination of lack
of exercises and the intake
of
high-
calorie,
high-fat "junk food"
like
hamburger, fried chicken, french fries
and
sweel
drinks.
Computer games
and
home
tuition
sessions
have
replaced healthy physical
activities.
Limit the amount of
'lunk
food"
and
other high-calorie candies,
nuts,
peanuts, chocolates and
deserts.
Encourage physical exercises; even
household chores are beneficial.
lt
pays
to change
the
life style of these
young
populations.
