There
are
3
major kinds
of
nutritional items: carbohydrates
(or
sugars),
protein and
fat.
Sugars
are
the
main energy sources and each
gram
of
sugar
produces
4,000
calories.
Sugars can be "simple" ones,
e.9.,
glucose and fructose (from fruit),
"double" ones,
e.9.,
sucrose
(cane
sugar), maltose (from malt)
lactose
(from
milk)
or "complex" ones, e.9.,
in
flour
and
cereals, potatoes and nuts. As
both simple and double sugars
are
rapidly absorbed,
the
body sugar level
may
fluctuate considerably.
Diabetics
should preferably take complex sugars.
Moreover, taking food with
more
fibre
also helps
to
stabilize sugar
levels.
Proteins also produce 4,000 calories
per gram but its most
important
job
is
to
build cells and tissues and to form
enzymes, hormones
and
antibodies.
Meat, fish, egg,
milk
and beans are
rich
sources.
Fats
stabilize organ positions,
keep body
warmth and
nourish the skin;
some vitamins are
fat
soluble.
As
1
gram of
fat
produces 9,000 calories,
take minimal amounts of unsaturated
oil like peanut and corn
oil.
Avoid food
with
high cholesterol content,
e.9.,
brain, kidney and egg
yolk,
etc.
