lnsulin secreted
by
the pancreas,
is
responsible for lowering blood sugar.
lf the insulin manufactured
is
of
poor
quality, both sugar
and
insulin levels
would be
high
(non-insulin dependent
diabetes).
Conversely,
the lack
of
insulin results in
the
insulin-dependent
diabetes. Normally, there are around
5% of
the
precursor
of insulin
in the
secretion.
However, larger amounts
would render
the
patient less able to
manage higher levels of blood glucose
- "reduced glucose
tolerance".
Other
causes are: increase
of
anti-insulin
factors
or
the lack of insulin receptors
so
that
insulin cannot exert its action
on the target
cells.
Diabetes
is
a
genetic disease
-
the
relatives
of
diabetics
have
a
higher
chance
of
getting
diabetes.
Diabetics are
often
obese because overeating actually
stimulates secretion of insulin
which
in
turn promotes synthesis
of
fat.
Hence,
there
is a very
valid
reason for
diabet-
ics to control the diet and body weight.
Persistent high blood sugar
causes
accelerated
utilization
o1
fat
and
proteins
and
damage
to
the
kidneys,
the
eyes, the nerves, the arteries supply-
ing
the heart, the brain and the lower
limb, etc.
